A New Gem in College Park

School is back in session, with thousands of students making the trek to colleges across the United States and beyond. And those returning to the University of Maryland in College Park, or perhaps attending for the first time, will find the beautiful new Hotel at the University of Maryland—the home of one of our most recent projects. With roughly 40,000+ students, UMCP has reason to anticipate a large influx of visitors at times, and the need for a fully outfitted hotel was obvious. The Hotel at the University of Maryland coins itself “a luxury hotel and conference center,” with five restaurants, amenities that include a Red Door spa, indoor pool, sustainable design, complimentary shuttle, and state-of-the-art fitness center, and a convenient location just across the street from the main entrance of the university.

The Project
For this project, we found ourselves in a picturesque walkway with shiny floors, recessed lighting in the ceiling, and eight large windows. Tall snake plants lined the windows in modern planters, adding color and interest to the area, while artfully blocking the view out of the windows, a view that, if left obscured, showed the exterior of the building along with duct work and an HVAC system.

The hotel contains 297 guest rooms and suites, and with that amount of rooms—rooms that tout the “luxury” status, in addition to the common areas, conference rooms, and other various areas within the hotel, it is important the building contain equipment, utilities, and systems that are top-of-the-line, quiet, and, perhaps one of the more indirect but important attributes, out of sight.

Choices, Choices
No one wants to see those unsightly pieces of equipment, as it diminishes from the overall aesthetics of an area, so to further aid in this effort, we applied a gradient film with vertical “beach grass” etching to complement the plants. Gradient window film is offering in an array of choices – You can pick from an assortment of styles, colors, and levels of light transmission. Designs can replicate beach grass, as mentioned above, or also be styled to look like dots, stripes, feathers, honeycomb, or other designs. Customization can be done for any width or height within your office, commercial space, hotel, or home. Gradient film is an ideal choice as it offers separation, privacy, and subtly, without sacrificing light or openness with its application. While we know it can be overwhelming to choose, part of our passion lies in assisting our clients with making the optimum selection for their project needs.

It was our pleasure to work with the Hotel on this project, working to maintain an elevated feel while hiding the necessary HVAC equipment behind a gorgeous design. Should they so desire, the film can be easily removed and replaced with a new design or film, depending on the desired effect.
